Behind the Headlines

Behind the Headlines – Wednesday 28 August 2019

Jamshid Chalangi:

Tonight we will look at the latest news of Iran and the Middle East region as more civil rights activists are arrested in Iran.

The latest victim is Mr Zartosht Ahmadi Ragheb who was arrested by the regime’s security forces hours after he gave an interview to this program.

He joins scores of journalists, artists and human rights activist who have been rounded up in recent days for signing the letter that calls for the resignation of Khamenei and holding a referendum in Iran.

Reports are coming in about a military confrontation between the Revolutionary Guards and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in which two member of the DemocraticParty of Kurdistan of Iran have been killed.

Turkey’s president has arrived in Moscow for meeting with Putin about the Syrian Kurds while in Japan Javad Zarif has said that Iran does not seek any increase in the tension in the region.

Our guest tonight to discuss these issues is Mr Hassan Etemadi.

Mr Hassan Etemadi:

Sadly so long as the current regime rules over our country we are always reporting and discussing bad news, especially now that Iran is facing numerous problems internally and on the international stage.

As the situation gets worse, the more aggressive the regime becomes towards the population. However, at the same time the protest movement in the country is getting momentum and hopefully eventually we will also have somegood news to report.

As you know, Mr Zartosht Ahmadi Ragheb has been among the 14 signatories of the first open letter.

According to eyewitness’s reports, the security officers have raided his home and beaten him up before arresting him. So far more than 19 people have been detained in this regard, which includes two women activists. No one knows where they are being held and what their conditions are.

Our fellow Iranians who live abroad must offer their support for these freedom fighters in any way they can.
