Behind the Headlines – Tuesday 27 August 2019

Jamshid Chalangi:

Tonight we will look at the latest news of Iran and the world, plus the economic plight of the Iranian people after many years of facing austerity due to the sanctions.

The quarrel between Iran and US still continues as Javad Zarif visits France and we try to find out what message he has delivered from the regime’s top leadership to the G7 gathering, while some regard his whole trip as a humiliation for the regime.

We will also look at the latest news of the arrest of civil rights activists involved in joining the campaign of calling for Khamenei’s resignation and holding a referendum for changing the system of governance in Iran.

The US special envoy for Iranian affairs Mr Brian Hook has declared that the birthday of the late Sattar Beheshti should be called the Day of Friendship between the American and Iranian People as, in his words, the friendship between nations will always prevail any differences between governments.

We hear the national anthem of Iran being played in a street corner in Boston, but what would happen if somebody in Tehran played America’s anthem? Surely the regime would accuse them of being a “spy at the service of a foreign adversarial country”!!

At the G7 summit two issues of the US-China trade war and taxation on importedgoods from member countries were discussed and president Trump has declaredthat the Chinese are happy to negotiate with his government about this issue.

However, some Chinese officials have denied this but the stock exchange markets figures indicate that Trump has been telling the truth.

In Iran in the meantime the people are struggling with their economic life as middlemen keep importing Chinese goods into the country while the government has given permission to Chinese fishermen to freely roam in the waters of the Persian Gulf.

And in the north of the country the Russians have taken away the majority of the share of Iran’s rights in the Caspian Sea, so much so that the Iranians may not even be able to swim beyond a water demarcation as they may be shot by the Russian coastguards!!
