Behind the Headlines

Jamshid Chalangi:

The US-Iran confrontation has entered a new anddangerous phase as ayatollah Khamenei has been telling the Iranians that they should be prepared for a war. Friday prayers imams have repeated his warning across the country.

And with the US designating the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization we will ask how this factor can now contribute to the possibility of a military confrontation with Iran.

Also, what has happened to the Iranian working class since the Islamic republic came to power in Iran 40 years ago?

Our guests tonight to discuss these issues are Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh and Mr Mohammad Nourizad.

Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh:

As a poet and journalist I can only say that I am extremely sorry to see that my nation has lost its will and honour while witnessing so much hardship and suffering every single day but easily forgets them, and yet we are still preoccupied with talking about if the Shah’s regime came to power 60 years ago with the help of the Americans.

Our people are living under a 50 percent inflation and I suspect they are waiting for the “hidden Imam” to come and rescues them. They seem to be numbed and asleep.

However, many of them are aware that their miserable lives are the result of the actions of the ruling regime. We have so many “opposition leaders” inside and outside the country that no one seems to trust them fully.

On the one hand I am very depressed to see thislack of action by our people, and on the other hand I am happy that they do not want to just rise up for the sake of a change of regime, but an informed changing that would put an end to their miseries for ever.

Mohammad Nourizad:

I think our people have not mentally developed over the last forty years and are still dealing with their problems with a child’s mentality.

They have got used to seek for a “parent” to lead them in their lives rather than stand up on their own feet and choose a destiny for themselves and gain it.

They rose up two years ago and suffered a lot and what we see today is the result of that uprising that did not go forward toachieve its objectives.

They are always looking for a Shah or Khomeini or Mousavi or Khatami and unless they rely on their own power we will be in this limbo situation.
